LuMè is a blend of Nocellara del Belice, Biancolilla and Cerasuola olives. It’s still produced using the old pressing method. The olives are first crushed with a heavy stone wheel, the “millstone.” Today, this technique is very demanding and is suitable for small productions since the millstone and press need to be cleaned several times a day to prevent the oil from oxidizing. By using this old technique, however, all the aromas are retained and overtime the oil keeps as if it had just been made.
Area
Since time immemorial, the grapevine has been an important resource for the people of Valle del Belice, in Sicily. The first human settlement in this area was Selinunte, an ancient Greek colony of Magna Graecia founded by the people of Megara in the seventh century B.C. The people of Selinunte planted olive groves in the valleys and fertile lands along the Belice and Modione rivers.
